Comparative Rhetorical Strategies and Linguistics Patterns
Rap hip hop is a genre of music that has gained international celebrations among fans from all over .This music in particular was started in the 1970s .The key players during this time were black American rappers who sought out to express their lives during a time when most people in this community were set aside and neglected forcing them into ghettos resulting in a society that was borne to social evils. This music was am endeavor to create an identity for this community and express their sentiments through art .In recent years, this genre has however spread to other races and classes as there have been other hip hop rappers rising from the whites and other international communities. This paper seeks to compare and contrast the differences between this two specific groups in regards to rap hip hop in America looking at the rhetoric strategies and linguistic patterns
Black rap hip-hop
The rise of hip hop rap among the blacks was the view of younger generations in the US in the 1970/80s seeming to retrieve and revive the community’s heritage. The order had been compromised to the extent the community had become complacent and inactive. This rise was a protest by the young people who sought to express their sentiments in regards to the unfairness and social injustices that were presently being tolerated yet extensively damaging to the development of the community. This was in regards to ghetto settlements and brutality exercised within the community and by authorities .It became a the foundation of an identity that would essential present grievances while at the same time provision entertainment which was very appealing to the majority whites who they regarded as’ Public Enemy’ and ‘cracker'(Eiseweth, 11).However this does not define hip-hop extensively as will be evidenced.
White rap hip-hop
White hip hop rap is identified to have started in the 1980s several years after the black hip hop rap began. In this particular view, It did not come into the market as an identity but rather as an occupational endeavor that was based on sales making and promotion of talent .Some key names in within the faction of rap hip hop are Eminem, vanilla ice, Marky Mark, Iggy Azelea among other dominant names (Barshad).It has seen the inception of some of the best rappers in hip hop. However, the representation of this group of rappers has no ideal history as opposed to the black rap which was initially to portray the identities of the community and present a social class of individuals expressing sentiments in regards to their lives in American ghettos.
Comparison between the black and white hip hop raps
The similarities in rhetoric strategies are wide spread. To aid presenting this similarities, a closer look at two particular artists will avail the context of the applications. This will employ Childish Gambino song ‘This is America ‘ and Eminem’s ‘The storm’ To begin with both of this song’s lyrics and biography were focused on exposing the political atmosphere and social climate that was at play in the trump era.(Carey, 88)Another similarity is that this two song redeploy the use of lyrics towards addressing several issue that are pertinent to the era and employ on action for the public in regards to measures that will ensure an end to the conjecture that Is depriving the civic liberties of individuals(Carey, 66)This two songs act as a protest for fairness and equitably addressing the present state of the country.
It is evident the two since depict an essence of hip-hop mentored on advocating for the various ails in American society in the 21st century .However, there are some key differences in relating to the artists, the actions and the lyrics. It is clear Childish Gambino and Eminem work on different lines with in the racial platform. The lyrics and methodologies used towards production of ‘This is America’ took on the use of symbolic language and actions prompting discerning within the reception of the message(Carey, 67).However, in ‘The storm’, Eminem makes direct references to the president and incorporated the use of uncensored words. This clearly identifies that the repercussion in rhetorical strategies are not applicable to all as were it Childish Gambino who used such words in address, it would have resulted into problematic issues with the president. In addition to this clear line of the difference shows that white artists are more likely to seek after controversies as compared to the blacks who seek action on social issues (Carey, 88).
Linguistic patterns in hip hop rap from both blacks and whites are identical I regards to the slang standards used which do not conform to the AAE language. This incorporates hidden and communicative messages and cues especially within the group that is knowledgeable of the music (Balliu, 44).Therefore example the use of the word such as ‘da jawn’ which implies asking for something or hella which implies very. Language cues exist in both white and black hip-hops and are used to propel the whole idea of the artist by incorporating them into times.
As stated earlier, black hip-hop is more concerned on the issue of expression and presentation of compelling issues on black communities in America. This incorporated a wide variety of words that make individual be perceived as dangerous and intimidating. An example is Gangsta rap which originated in the 1980s and has over transitioned .It implied the use of deadly words and sentiments that depicted a group full of rage and desperation to engage in anything they saw suit. This however is not the case in whites rap and most rappers use languages that are less harmful yet controversial.as they seek opening in the market(Balliu, 57).The perspectives activism and business stand as the manor linguistic difference pattern as both races priorities are different.
